Stylistically, this appears to date from Turner's tour of the Alps in 1843. His journey that year took him from Baden to Lucerne, through the St. Gothard Pass to Bellinzona, south to Pallanza and Como, and back north to Baden via Splugen, Maienfeld and Zurich. This watercolour has been authenticated by curators of the Turner Bequest at the Tate Gallery.
