In the nineteenth century Liverpool was the second city of England. It was the main port for trade with America servicing the cities of central England, which had grown as a result of the Industrial Revolution. It was the only city besides London to have its own Royal Academy, which had been blessed by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Thus it spawned a very important group of artists. It is important to note that one of its greatest sons was George Stubbs. The contemporary book on the Liverpool School was written by H. C. Marillier in 1904. Attached is his chapter on Williams Huggins.
