Luigi Mayer was a landscape painter of Italian origins who between 1776 and 1792 painted many works for Sir Robert Ainslie (1730-1812), the English ambassador to Constantinople. Mayer's contemporary views formed the core of the ambassador's collection of illustrations of Eastern life. The drawings and watercolours done by Luigi Mayer were engraved by Thomas Milton and published in three volumes between 1801-1804.
