Henry Moore was the elder brother of Albert Joseph Moore and studied under his father William Moore at the York School of Design and at RA schools. His early landscapes and rural scenes show Pre-Raphaelite influence but about 1857 he turned to marine painting, for which he is best known. He was one of the first painters to try and observe accurately the movement and moods of the sea. In his search for it his technique became fluid and his colours impressionistic. The artist closest to him in technique and ideas is the Scottish painter William MacTaggart. In the 1880s and 90s Moore was regarded as one of England's most important artists and his work was exhibited throughout Europe.
