James Stuart Park is famous as a Glasgow flower painter. He was born at Kidderminster the son of a carpet designer. He studied in Paris and began to exhibit at the institute in 1883. At first he only painted in his spare time, but in 1888 he took up art professionally. Park specialised in painting carefully arranged bouquets of roses, lilies, rhododendrons, orchids and azaleas. He developed a very individual technique, using thick and rapid strokes against a dark background, suggesting rather than defining the texture and colour of flowers. He worked only in Scotland, and did not exhibit in London.
