Art Journal, 1849, page 170: "This composition is crowded with figures of whom those of the Italian boys are the least conspicuous. The circle comprehends persons of all ages, busily canvassing Pio Nono, Joan d'Arc, Cupid and Psyche, Napoleon, and perhaps Richard Cobden. The scene is rendered with much spirit and the characters individually with becoming truth."
