There are two watercolours by David Roberts of this subject. The compositions are slightly different. This one was lithographed by Louis Haghe in 1837. The other version, from a slightly altered angle and with variations to the figures and bull-ring scene, is in the collection of the Provost and Fellows of Eton College. It measures 27 x 41 centimetres and was engraved by J. B. Allom as the frontispiece for Landscape Album, 1836. This also shows the cathedral and Giralda in the background. The artist arrived in Seville in May 1833 and stayed until September when an outbreak of cholera caused him to leave by boat, abandoning further exploration of Spain. Roberts worked very hard in Seville and his stay also coincided with the Feast of Corpus Christi, one of the most splendid festivals of the Roman Catholic Church and celebrated there with particular magnificence.
