The water lily is the main totem of the Balimbi people, whose country is situated around a fresh water billabong on the mainland adjacent to Milingimbi Island, known as Yathalamara. It is the country of the artist’s mother. The water lily plant leaves and flower buds are shown. The bulbs as well as being used for ceremonial purposes, are a valuable source of food.
