The celebrated horse, Koh-i-noor or the mountain of light, represented in this drawing, was presented to Runjeet Sing by Peer Mahomed Khan, a half brother of Dost Mahomet Khan’s when he fled from the Afghan territory to seek protection in the Punjab. The partiality of the Sikh chieftain for these animals was proverbial: indeed he never heard one praised, without endeavouring by fair means or foul to obtain it, and having long desired to possess “Koh-I noor,” Peer Mahomed hoped to ensure himself a favorable reception at his court by bringing it with him. On its back is a son to the Mahomedan chief, accompanied by his Afghan attendants.
