Avon, produced by Edinburgh Weavers, is a fabric which was commissioned by the Ministry of Works for the new Conference Hall at the British Embassy in Washington D.C., USA in 1959. The Avon fabric is a mix of rayon and cotton, and depicts eight Shakespearean characters. It would seem that this large piece of fabric is unique. Tate has held small samples of the fabric since the British Embassy in Washington was refurbished.
