The memorable sights of a 19th century artist’s travels are painstakingly recorded in detailed and delicate images. Two folders of watercolours and drawings were discovered, where some of the works were signed by the artist JWA and many dated. The first album contained views of the West Indies and the second contained monochrome sketches from Baltimore to Lake Ticonderoga on the Canadian border. The artist’s identity remains a mystery, although he was almost certainly British and most probably a merchant seaman. The albums had been in an English family for at least the whole of the 20th century. Details from a sketch from the second album detail the hold of the barque 'Bolivar'. It is captioned Hold of the barque Bolivar, Capt J Fenwick, Jan 1833.
